Sizing
Common standard sizes include: One Sheet 27" x 41" or 27" x 40"\

DVD Covers are usually kept simple with the design and tend to only contain 1 image and a small colour pool however this changes with the style of film that it is being designed for as more creative films could go for a more outlandish design to match the style of the film.

Examples of Movie posters being changed:

Through these photos of different movie posters that i have found the Jaws poster seems the most interesting as it takes a less realist approach to the subject of the film.  I believe this has been used to be able to market the film more wildly due to the person in the swimsuit in the first poster, this may be seen as showing too much skin and rather than offending people Czechoslovakia decided to play it safe.

When researching different movie posters, classic Cronenberg movies like the Fly and Scanners really stood out to me with their very 80's style in horror.

The difference in posters between "The Fly" and "Scanners" in different countries are more artistic and rather to censor the film like other films the foreign film posters try using a more artistic design, such as the Poland poster for the fly is completely different and shows a humanoid fly in a cartoon element, this is a lot more creative than the normal poster. the Italian poster for Scanners on the other hand has a lot more colour, although it supplies less contextual knowledge to the story of the film, it is a lot more colourful and would do better at grabbing the audiences attention through using colours like red and yellow which are great for grabbing attention of the viewer.

In researching Cronenberg i thought it would be important to look up other 80's horror movies for examples of conventions and techniques used in this decade.

When researching 80's movie poster i found one that i particularly like was for "Re-animator"

The style of this poster stood out to me because of the contrasting colours and the classic horror conventions of scientist and the undead.

When it comes to creating a modern movie posters in an 80's fashion the movie "Drive" uses a lot of retro lighting and neon in their posters that creates a bit of an 80's ascetic to the poster.

Looking through the posters that i have found some of the conventions that are shown in the 80's posters are:

  • Quotes giving certain information about the movie such as "Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders... and another on his desks" this provides a strong idea about what the movie will be about while creating a bit of mystery.
  • The low key lighting and fade out to the border o the poster like in the Re-Animator poster in which the the poster fades out into the black background poster.

I am gonna try to use a green hazmat suit for my movie poster to hide the antagonist and create ideas of government involvement. this will also give theme of science for the viewer.
